Reading Lists - Guide to Creating and Editing a Reading List

About the digitisation service

Decorative image

It may be useful to request digitisation of articles and book chapters if:

  • The book is only available in print, or if there is a limited user licence to an ebook version (e.g. a 3 user licence may not be sufficient for a module with a large number of students).
  • The journal is only available in print or if the Library does not subscribe to it.

All digitisation must be copyright compliant which means for any module we may digitise:

  • One chapter or up to 10% of a book.
  • Up to two articles or 10% from a single issue of a journal.

Unfortunately some publishers have excluded their material from Copyright Licensing Agency licence and a small number of titles can't be digitised.

Make a digitisation request

  1. Click on the title of the book chapter or article to expand the details.
  2. Click Request digitization, complete any missing details in the pop-up window and click Send
    - The module dates will automatically be added. These are required for copyright reasons.
    - For book chapters add the chapter number.
    - Page numbers are essential.
  3. The Library will ensure digital copies are added to your reading list or will inform you if copyright permission cannot be obtained.

What happens next year?

Copyright will be renewed automatically for all digitised chapters and books. There is no need to click the Digitization request link again.

In a small number of cases, the publisher may exclude an item from the Copyright Licensing Agency licence and we will have to remove a digitised copy from your list. The Library will inform you if this happens.

FAQ - What is the CLA option?

The CLA link (just below the Request Digitization option) will indicate whether a publisher allows digitisation of chapters and articles.

If there is a green tick for scanning the Library can usually provide a digital copy. If all options have a red cross, please contact the Library so that we can check if there are alternatives.
