Reading Lists - Guide to Creating and Editing a Reading List

Option 3: Cite it! for adding web resources to reading lists

The Cite It! tool is a bookmarklet inserted in your browser toolbar. It allows you to add external resources such as websites, government documents and blogs directly from your browser.

Use Cite it! for content unlikely to be held in the Library.

Some websites are now blocking the Cite it! functionality. The sites we know are impacted are:

  • YouTube
  • Wiley
  • Elsevier

An alternative solution is currently being worked on and expected to be available in the first quarter of 2025.

Adding Cite it! to your browser

To use this feature, you need to add the Cite It! bookmarklet to your Internet browser:

  1. In ReadingLists, click settings cog (top right)
  2. Select Cite It!
  3. Drag the Cite it! tool to the favourites toolbar on your browser.

  4. Edit the information to ensure it is correct and will give a meaningful reference in your reading list (the correct details are not always passed across from the website).

Cite it! and Amazon

If you use Cite it! from Amazon e.g. for books not found by Search the library  it is helpful to:

  • Ensure the full Title is included and if possible give an ISBN if missing. You can copy and paste the ISBN from the Amazon page.
  • Add any other missing details e.g. publisher and year of publication
  • Remove the Amazon URL

If the Library does not have a particular book added from Amazon, you will be asked if you would like it to be purchased.
