Reading Lists - Guide to Creating and Editing a Reading List

Canvas navigation

1. Click the Reading List option in the left hand navigation menu in Canvas.

2. Select whether to Create a List from scratch or to Rollover and update an existing list

Once you have completed the list, your students will use the Reading List link in Canvas to view and use the list.

Rollover and update an existing list

1. Click Rollover and update an existing list.

2. You will now see the reading lists you have worked on previously and have been added to your My Lists.

3. Select the list to be rolled over, being sure you choose the list with the correct year e.g. the version from the previous year.

NoteIf you do not see your list in My Lists use the Search to find it. You may neeed to select All lists from the drop-down filter.

Important: Contact the Library if you do not find the correct list or are not able to roll it over.

4. Click Rollover/Duplicate List

5. Edit details e.g. remove or replace 'rolled over' with course year,  provide a description if required, then click Create List.

6. Update your reading list as required e.g. add or remove sections or materials, edit and tag items, and click Publish List.

ESSENTIAL: Even if you do not need to make any changes to the reading list, you must publish it to make it visible to the students in Canvas and alert the Library that it is ready to be checked.

Add a reading list to multiple modules

If a number of modules use the same reading list, use the Manage link to course option to link it to all of them. This means you only have to create and edit a single list.

  1. In the Canvas module you wish to add to a list, click the Reading List option and click the Rollover option as above. But, do not proceed any further at this stage to actually rollover a list.
  2. Open the list that you have already created and wish to associate with other module(s).
  3. Click the ellipsis menu at the top of the list you have created and select Manage link to course.

  4. Type the module code you wish to link the list to and select as appropriate.

If at any time you don't want one of the courses to use the module, go to Manage link to course again, select the elipsis menu for the module you wish to remove and click Delete.
