Sharing content in Canvas or directly with students

It can be useful to provide reading list content e.g. an individual item or a whole section of
readings directly within your module or you may wish to share material with students separately.

A few different ways to do that are described below.

Embed items from your reading list in Canvas

  1. In the Canvas edit screen, click the app tool and select Embed Reading List Citations.

  2. The module reading list will open and you can select one or more items by ticking the checkbox(es) on the left.

  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the list to select the 'Bibliography style' (e.g. APA, Harvard, IEEE, Chicago or OSCOLA) and then click Add. The items including any thumbnail image will be inserted in Canvas.

  4. You should now have a reference to the item, thumbnail of the book cover (when available) and a link to the item. You can edit the reference if you wish.

Sharing links to reading list items or sections

  1. Click the share icons to get a permanent link for the whole reading list, a section of a reading list or an individual item on the list.

  2. Use the link to create hyperlinks in Canvas or send it directly to students or colleagues.

Tip: - you can also output the citation details from the reading list. See below.

NOTE: currently, the Link to Canvas option does not work. You are only able to use the Shareable link option (which is similar to the Canvas link anyway).

Output citation details from your reading list

If you are creating a hyperlink to a citation or reference, you can output the details from your list:

  1. Click the ellipsis menu and select Quick Cite.
  2. Select a bibliography style e.g. Harvard and click Copy to clipboard.
  3. Paste the citation to Canvas or other document (you may have to edit some of the details) and don't forget to get the permanent link and create your hyperlink.
