Use RefWorks to collect and manage your references and help with your in-text citations and bibliographies.

Creating a Login for RCM (RefWorks Citation Manager)

If you usually access new RefWorks with a user name and password, you can use the same login for RCM.

Alternatively:

If you usually Use login from my institution to access new RefWorks, create your RCM login as follows:

  1. Login to New RefWorks: http://refworks.proquest.com 

  2. Click your name at the top right and select Settings

  3. Scroll down to Alternate Password and click on Set alternate Password

  4. Enter a new password and click Save 

Link a Personal New RefWorks Login to Institutional Login

If you created a username and password for New RefWorks but would prefer to Use login from my institution, you can associate your account. You will then have a choice of login methods.

  1. Go to http://refworks.proquest.com and login with the username (usually your university email address) and password you created when you registered. 

  1. Click your name at the top right and select Settings.

  2. Scroll down to Institutional Credentials and choose Associate Credentials

  1.  You may be directed to your Institution's website to complete the process, or if RefWorks already has your details you will be taken directly to your New Refworks account. 

Troubleshooting Login from my institution

When using login from my institution for the first time, you will be asked to accept cookies and occasionally after that point you will see a blank screen and can't proceed to the next step in the process. It may look like this:

At this point please click the refresh icon in refresh your browser (or F5 on your keyboard) and you can complete your registration. Contact the Library if there are further issues.

New RefWorks Accounts

You can choose to login to RefWorks using a personal username and password. This is recommended if:

  • You also upgrade to using the RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM) in Word as currently this requires username login
  • You wish to continue using RefWorks when you graduate or leave the University. All that will be required is to update your email address in settings to your personal address.

Alternatively you can 'Use Login from my institution'

  • Use Login from my institution may be necessary if you wish to continue using Write-N-Cite (WNC) in Word (instead of RCM).
  • Note: institutional login will not work once you have left the University. You can update to using user name and password if you wish to continue using RefWorks buit you 'must' do this before graduating.

SIgn-up for a New RefWorks Account (personal account with user name and password)

Ceate a personal account if you are happy to use a user name and password. Note that you need a personal user name (this must be your University email address) and password to use the associated writing tool RCM (RefWorks Citation Manager) to cite your referencences directly into a Word document) and this account will operate for both New RefWorks and RCM.

  1. Go to http://refworks.proquest.com and click the “Create Account” link.

     
  2. Fill in your information using your University of Stirling email address.
  3. Create a password which you will remember. Do not use your University password.

Next you should receive an email with a link to complete the registration process. You may need to check your spam/junk mailbox.

Use login from my institution

IMPORTANT: When using login from my institution for the first time, you will be asked to accept cookies and occasionally after that point you will see a blank screen and can't proceed to the next step in the process. At this point please click the refresh icon in refresh your browser (or F5 on your keyboard) and you can complete your registration. Contact the Library if there are further issues.

Use login from my institution if you mostly use RefWorks to collect your refereces and you usually use the 'Create Bibliography' link to copy and paste your reference list for your essays and other work.

Note: if you also wish to use RCM (Reference Citation Manager) to cite your references directly to your Word document, you will also need to create a personal user name and password.

  1. Go to https://refworks.proquest.com.  

  1. From the login box click Use login from my institution. 

  1. Type Stirling or browse down to University of Stirling, and click on University of Stirling 

 

  1. If you are asked to sign in, please use your full user name e.g. jbl0000@stir.ac.uk (students) or msm4@stir.ac.uk (staff) followed by your University network password. 


     

  2. You may be asked to enter your University email address and give your consent to the Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions. There may be some additional questions to answer.
